Zilker Park’s Best Kids Event
Come with family, friends, and pets to Zilker Park for one of Austin’s best-known annual events—the Kite Festival. This event kicks off a number of Spring events and is an opportunity to enjoy the good weather against the backdrop of thousands of kites in the blue sky. It’s one of the best events for the kids Austin has to offer all year, as long as the weather co-operates. The event is free, but parking or getting there is tough to pull off for free these days anywhere near Zilker Park.
Spring Festivals in Austin
The event has traditionally been held on the first Sunday in March, but over the past few years the event has been cancel a few times because of the weather. In 2019 the event started moving to the end of March. This Year it is the first weekend in April, so it will be after SXSW instead of right before.
Bring Your Kites
We have always brough our own Walmart kites in the past, there are kite vendors at the event. There are some pretty amazing kites all over the place. Not just in the official Zilker Park zone.
Parking and VIP Passes
They now have “High Flyer Club Passes” and that includes VIP parking for an additional price. According to the website if you buy a VIP parking pass without a VIP pass, then you have just made a donation, and will receive no parking pass! I have been in Austin long enough to remember when this event did not have parking passes and early VIP access. You can also buy a non VIP Parking Pass.
Kite Contest
Open to all ages, all kinds of kites, and free to enter, the annual kite contest and showcase is the ABC Kite Fest’s oldest and greatest tradition. Read on to learn how to enter. Registration opens at 11:00 AM at the Contest Field. The contest and showcase begin at 1:00 PM.
