Lake Fun without a Boat

A recent Birthday party brought me to a small lake about an hour drive from downtown Austin. On Lake Placid in Texas (not to be confused with the famous one in New York) there is a small island with Tiki huts and a campsites that is accessible by car. The huts line the small island with some on the water, and some on the edge. All have docs, most of the big enough to park a small boat. The huts feature power, a ceiling fan, bar stools, benches, and few hammock chairs, loungers, and a BBQ Grill.

The island has two nice rope swings and a Frog water slide that is about 15 feet tall that drops directly into the lake. Kayaks paddle boards, and other cool stuff is available for rent or you can bring your own. The tents are provided, with fans for those that want to spend the night. We rented a hut for the day and arrived around noon, and had to leave at 7 when they shut it down for the day visitors.

We did bring our boat and the lake is a little small for a big ski boat. I saw a lot of bait fish in the area, and am eager to come back and try the fishing. Most of the residents have big boats in there sheds on the lake, but most people were on jet skis. We shut down tubing with the kids pretty quick.

This is a great place to bring a small group of people for the day. One of the nicest watering holes we have been to around the Texas Hill County, especially for those looking to hit the lake without a boat. It’s a little on the expensive side, best to split the cost with some people, and it’s a two car max, $50 per extra car.
