Ultimate Frisbee in Austin: Austin Sol and Austin Torch

Austin has a surprisingly strong ultimate frisbee scene, with two high-profile local teams and a broad recreational community. The Austin Sol and Austin Torch provide different opportunities to watch the fast-moving, non-contact field sport played at a highly competitive level.

Austin Sol: Professional Ultimate

The Austin Sol play in the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA). The team was founded in 2016 and typically competes through the spring and summer. UFA games take place on a large field and feature spectacular long throws, diving catches and quick transitions.

Austin Sol has also emphasized community outreach and teaching youth players. For the 2026 season, home games included matchups at Parmer Field in North Austin. Venue arrangements may change in future seasons, so use the official schedule to confirm each date.

Austin Torch: Women’s Professional Ultimate

The Austin Torch were formed in 2018 and compete in the Premier Ultimate League. The team creates opportunities for women, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming athletes to play high-level ultimate in front of paying crowds.

The Torch’s 2026 home schedule included games at the Texas School for the Deaf in South Austin. The organization is community-supported and frequently adds special activities to its game nights.

How Ultimate Works

Ultimate combines movement patterns familiar from soccer and football with the use of a flying disc. Players advance the disc by passing rather than running while holding it, and points are scored by catching it in the opponent’s end zone. Competitive ultimate emphasizes athleticism, positioning and accurate throwing.

The sport’s tradition of sportsmanship and the ‘Spirit of the Game’ also makes it attractive to beginners looking for a new team activity.

Watching or Playing

For live matches, check the Sol’s UFA schedule and the Torch’s team schedule. Adult pickup groups, college programs and youth clubs also offer ways to play around Austin. Equipment requirements are simple compared with many contact sports, which lowers the barrier for newcomers.

Why It Is Worth Watching Live

Television highlights capture spectacular catches, but live ultimate makes it easier to appreciate the way teams move across the field and create openings. The disc can travel a long distance in a single throw, yet quick short passes are equally important. A local match can also be a useful first step for people considering joining a recreational team.
